10 Biggest Gaming Moments of 2012

7. Source Filmmaker

If you're not familiar with the term Machinima, it's a fancy word to describe the artistic process of creating films using the engine of a video game. In 2012, Valve developed the Source Filmmaker, which provides the most complex and sophisticated set of tools for budding filmmakers the world over. If games such as GTA IV (the PC version) allowed players to make their own movies with recorded footage, then SFM takes it a whole step further, allowing users to not only change camera angles and shots but also to tween the very fine animations of the characters and even affect mouth movement to make for the most cinematic and engaging film possible. Valve have been insistent that they want their players to interact with the world that they spend so long playing through, and championing this sort of creativity is an awesome way to do it, at once endorsing the brand and giving players some amazing tools to toy around with. More developers should be this forward-thinking, though we imagine they'd struggle to come up with a package as comprehensive as this.
