10 Biggest Recent Fan Critic Divides In Video Games
4. Persona 3 Portable
For anyone whose only familiarity with the Persona series is Persona 5, going back to Persona 3 is a stark lesson in how far this series has come. Rightfully praised throughout its multiple releases and re-releases in the 2000s, this latest re-release of the final re-release, Persona 3: Portable, is the first time this decade-old game has reached a new generation.
With a critic score of 87 on Metacritic, reviewers mostly judged the remaster by the standards of its time in 2009. They praised the extra polish expected from a remaster, such as improved resolution and frame rate. They also still loved the story, characters, and developing the social links that make up your day-to-day life as a high school student (when not fighting monsters).
A new generation of Persona 5 fans didn't share those rose-tinted glasses. They bemoaned the game's small scope, lack of social links and shallow relationship development.
Most of all, they barely tolerated Tartarus - the game's only dungeon, which randomizes its floors with each visit - seeing it as a monotonous grind through identical environments. The 6.4 user score speaks a lot to changing generational expectations in gaming.
