Love it or hate it, Fortnite has changed the face of video games forever. Not only has Epic Games opened their own digital store to rival Valve's long running Steam service, but the runaway success of the multiplayer shooter has spawned another key advancement.

Crossplay, the ability to play a game between two or more different platforms, was unheard of during the last few console generations. But with more and more fans divided over the systems they play, be it console or PC, the call has continually come to change that way of thinking, led by Epic's rampant success along with the likes of Minecraft and Rocket League.

Little by little, the barriers began to fall away, until it all came to a head in 2019 with Activision's own juggernaut, Call of Duty. The latest in the series, a somewhat rebooted Modern Warfare, featured full crossplay and cross progression support between PS4, Xbox One and PC, a first for a big budget release and a certainly welcome surprise to those who support the idea of multiplayer for all.

Though the floodgates haven't officially opened, having a major AAA title involved says a lot about the future of how multiplayer will be handled, to the point where crossplay might become a normal, everyday option.
