10 Blatantly Racist Video Games

6. Resident Evil 5

Long before its release, Resident Evil 5 attracted a lot of controversy for what was perceived as its protagonist, Chris Redfield, committing a one-man mass genocide across Africa, gunning down black after black with the quest of eradicating whatever virus was circulating this time. While a white man killing blacks of course is not inherently racist, it's that the entire game is racially insensitive, essentially allegorising the horrors of the AIDS epidemic in Africa but being absolutely flippant about it rather than doing it in an intelligent, considered way. The game's solution to the epidemic? Slaughter everyone infected, something which didn't go over so well with race and AIDS advocacy groups, but Capcom naturally had a solution. Miraculously, the next trailer that showed up introduced a black sidekick character called Sheva, as though saying "Black people can be a force for good, too!". It's patronising at best, offensive at worst, and really it just does all of us - gamers, the developers, and the human race in general - a disservice.
