Q.U.B.E owes an awful lot to Portal, which might be considered the grandmother to many of the titles on this list. But here's the thing, while Portal is both a superior game and more original, Q.U.B.E messes with your mind to a far greater extent.
The puzzles are more complex and frustrating. Different colored blocks can be manipulated in different ways, and the ways in which they must be combined in order to progress means the Q.U.B.E is a much slower game than Portal. It's also, despite being highly addictive, a lonely, and empty experience. There's no A.I. GLaDOS to keep you company. And there's no real plot to engage with. Just isolation, puzzles, and relentless progress for its own sake.
Playing Q.U.B.E is like standing at the end of a factory line that produces Rubik's cubes, and it's your job to solve them. But you never get to find out why solving them is even necessary.
Q.U.B.E makes you want to smash your head against a wall. But for some reason, you can't quite bring yourself to stop playing. Go figure...
