While there are certainly other 3D side-scrolling horror titles to choose from - Little Nightmares and Limbo to name two - Inside is the only one that actively tries to kill you from the get-go as opposed to death by failing to solve a puzzle.
Inside utilises an in medias res open well; you are placed in this bleak world with no idea where you are going or what you are meant to be doing. All you know is that you are completely alone.
The unnamed boy emerges into some dense woods in the dead of night with only crickets and leaves crunching under your footsteps to be heard.
It's almost serene.
You come to a truck only visible by its rear brake lights, but as you get closer you see that the rear is filled with scared, huddled people being taken to parts unknown.
After the truck leaves, you must avoid detection, but a hound quickly picks up your scent and you are forced to flee.
You are chased by dogs, hunted by mysterious men and even shot at all within the opening six minutes.
I will not delve any further into the game as you simply must explore this world for yourselves, but be prepared to die a few times.
