10 Cancelled Video Games You Wish You Could Play
6. Fallout 3: Van Buren
Fallout 3: Van Buren was the intended third installment in the RPG series and was developed by Black Isle Studios under Interplay Entertainment. The team was responsible for the first two entries in the franchise which featured a deep story while having isometric, turn-based combat.
Van Buren would have opened in 2253 where the player would have been incarcerated in prison. Set in the unforgiving wasteland, the prisoner would encounter famous Fallout factions such as the New California Republic and The Brotherhood of Steel. By interacting and winning over smaller factions, players would turn the tide of the war and choose which side to support.
Van Buren would end with the threat of a second nuclear holocaust where gamers would decide where the missiles would strike. Aside from the story, gameplay would have remained an isometric turn-based RPG though real-time combat was planned due to demands by Interplay Entertainment.
The publisher went bankrupt in 2003 which led to the game's cancellation. Fallout 3 would then be released in 2007 but had no relation to Van Buren and was instead developed by Bethesda Game Studios.
Elements of the original Fallout 3 such as Caesar's Legion and the Hoover Dam would later be brought back in Fallout: New Vegas which was made by many who worked on this game.
