In the mid 90s, the legendary rivalry between Sega and Nintendo would be decided in the fifth generation of video game consoles.

The Sega Saturn, the successor to the Genesis, proved to be a hindrance for the company with its expensive price and difficult hardware. At the same time, it was a Sega console that didn't even feature its mascot Sonic the Hedgehog.

That game would have been Sonic X-Treme and was intended to be the hedgehog's transition into 3D. Presented in a fish-eye lens, Sonic would traverse through new environments and would freely roam across the terrain. He could even run through spherical levels which predated Super Mario Galaxy.

New moves such as the Power Ball and the Sonic Boom were planned to be added to the hedgehog's growing list of abilities. At the same time, Tiara Boobowski would have served as a primary character while fan favorites such as Metal Sonic and Fang the Sniper would be fought as bosses.

Sonic X-Treme's development proved to be stressful enough that its developers became ill because of the pressure. Combined with internal politics and a strict deadline, Sega cancelled the game and the Saturn was left without a mainline Sonic title.

Many still ponder how things would have been different had X-Treme been released. Had it been a success, it would have allowed Sega to continue in the console industry.
