10 Cancelled Video Games You Won't Believe Were In Development
4. Metallica: The Game
Before we begin - this was, unfortunately, not a JRPG with a focus on the power of friendship. A true missed opportunity, really, to see Lars as the white mage with amnesia and a penchant for peace-sign posing like an anime girl.
But, contrary to your initial gut reaction, it wasn’t merely yet another Guitar Hero clone, either - this was actually a vehicular combat game, in the same vein as Twisted Metal. Players could jump out of their vehicles, though, to nick another, more murdery vehicle (if they so desired), making this something of a Destruction Derby-meets-Grand Theft Auto.
There was a big focus on the massive variety of vehicles - thanks to a semi-procedural customiser, there were hundreds of armour/weapon/chassis pieces, and during the PS2 era, this was pretty mind-blowing to see.
However, there was no word on who’d be producing the soundtrack, or even which genre it’d be. I was hoping... Megadeth.
