Shovel Knight – a two-dimension platformer – plays homage to the gameplay and graphical representations of the Nintendo Entertainment System.

As such, the game is remarkably challenging, but equally as rewarding. In the game, players control the character in conventional platforming sections, the controls wonderfully precise as the player overpowers enemies with their shovel, advancing through each unique stage of the game.

Equally, the game rewards exploration, the player able to uncover secret weapons and armour through interactions with villagers, completing side-quests and uncovering secrets stages.

That said, the gameplay is easily the most rewarding element, the sound-effects providing perfect emphasis on every swing of the shovel – not to mention the controls, which are super tight, perfectly capturing the spirit of its predecessors, providing just the right amount of challenge to create an endlessly rewarding experience.
