10 Challenging Video Games That Are Endlessly Rewarding
2. Resident Evil
Resident Evil – the original – was a notoriously challenging game, complete with awkward controls and restrictive camera perspectives. Since then, the series has evolved considerable, changing with each successive instalment, becoming gradually unrecognisable in the process.
That said, the remake – released in 2002 – improved the formula, perfectly balancing the challenge with adequate reward, creating a remarkably satisfying experience in the process.
Several new additions, such as the Crimson Heads – a powerful form of undead capable of actively pursuing the player, sprinting and lunging to attack – made the game absolutely nerve-wracking, accentuated by the resource management aspects which reward the player for avoiding encounters wherever possible.
The Spencer Mansion – the game’s primary setting – is designed to maintain this sense pacing, gradually uncovered as the player progresses, rewarding them for exploration despite the inherent risk involved.
