10 Cheap Boss Fights That Made You Rage Quit
1. Nitros Oxide - Crash Team Racing (1999)
Though Mario may be the king of Kart racers, Sony's marsupial mascot starred in their own excellent genre outing on the PS1 that's since become a cult classic.
Originally released in 1999, Crash Team Racing was not only stuffed with imaginative and colourful tracks, but it also featured a powerslide mechanic to earn speed boosts that was as challenging as it was satisfying to execute. The game also featured a dedicated story mode, which saw players go head-to-head against a collection of bosses. The last of which was Nitros Oxide.
Being the main antagonist, players expected that beating this extraterrestrial racer wasn't going to be easy. However, Oxide deploys so many sneaky tricks that the race becomes borderline unwinnable. For starters, this dastardly boss cheats by giving himself a head start, blasting off before the lights turn green. He also has perfect stats across the board, some of the most egregious rubber-banding in racing game history, and an infinite supply of weapons.
Although small tweaks to this boss's mechanics and the inclusion of lower difficulty levels made him slightly easier in the Refueled remake, Nitros Oxide remains an infuriating final hurdle in an otherwise flawless game.
