10 CLASSIC Video Game Commercials That Were Peak
7. Resident Evil Requiem
Even though Capcom made it clear the ninth Resident Evil instalment was in active development in 2024, nobody was ready for the grand unveiling. Rather than showing a brief teaser for Resident Evil Requiem, a three-and-a-half minute trailer dropped at this year's Summer Game Fest.
The first two minutes focuses on a FBI agent called Grace prepping for a new case. Though the exchange between her and her boss seems firmly grounded, the cryptic soundtrack suggests something more sinister is afoot.
Sure enough, the second-half showcases traditional RE imagery, including gloomy hallways, desolate cities, and zombies. And yet, the visuals are vague at first, so it's not blatantly obvious this trailer has any association with Capcom's survival horror saga.
However, everything clicks when the trailer shows the remnants of Raccoon City's police station, which was nuked during Resident Evil 3: Nemesis's climax. This was a double-whammy reveal, since long-time fans realised this wasn't just another Resident Evil game, but would be the first new instalment in 20+ years to take place in the epicentre of the original zombie outbreak. (Also, watching the trailer crowd reaction when the penny drops is deeply satisfying.)
Also, the decision to have Resident Evil Requiem take place in Raccoon City was a nice way to tie the latest entry to the classic franchise, returning players to where it all started.
