10 Classic Video Games (That Have Aged Horribly)
9. Crash Bandicoot
In an age where it was still considered to be necessary to have a system mascot; Crash Bandicoot served as Sony's representative for many.
It's amazing he ever achieved such a lofty standing considering that the initial Crash Bandicoot game was not very good. Many of its failures can be chalked up to the limitations of the Playstation system itself at that time. For as capable as Sony's inaugural system was from a technological standpoint, it always lagged behind the N64 and other rival systems when it came to creating true 3D worlds.
Crash, in retrospect, feels like an elongated tech demo for the possibilities of 3D gaming on the Playstation. Its pseudo-3D art style seemingly forced developer Naughty Dog to limit the gameplay to that of the most basic of 2D platformers. That higher level of skill that made some of the better 2D platformers as great as they are is removed entirely. What's left are a few design charms that help lend some lovability to Crash and his world and little else of note.
Developer Naughty Dog was of course just getting started in terms of what they would contribute to gaming, but their first major title has become an unfortunate representative of the limitations of its time.
