Dead Space is well-renowned as one of the finest horrors ever conceived. Known for its scary, oppressive atmosphere, terrifying monsters with far too many limbs and its unique HUD display, its a series that holds dear to many a gamer's heart.

A tie-in novel entitled Dead Space: Martyr is the key to unlocking not only the secrets of the Necromorphs, but also the Church of Unitology too. This mysterious church is referenced throughout the games, and is depicted mainly as a crazy cult responsible for the creation of these terrible beasts.

The story details what happens to a geophysicist known as Michael Altman, who ultimately becomes the first person to discover the mysterious alien artefact known as the Marker.

After the discovery of the Marker, people start to act strangely, with characters beating others to death and willingly asphyxiating themselves in space.

Soon after, a Cult around the marker starts to establish itself. This will in turn go on to become the Church of Unitology, but the leaders of this faction decide to alter history by killing Altman, and using the basis of the Marker to create a new religious order for profit.

They conveniently leave out the bits about the reanimated dead flesh.
