10 Comics & Novels That Answer MAJOR Video Game Plot Points
2. Mass Effect - Who Is The Illusive Man?
Yeah, I know, another Mass Effect entry. It's not my fault they left a whole load of lingering questions which could have been incorporated into Mass Effect 3!
Step forward, Mass Effect tie-in comic series, Mass Effect: Evolution.
One of the first things we learn from the novel is the Illusive Man's name - Jack Harper. A former mercenary, Jack was involved in the war against the Turians, and was part of a group who captured a Turian general, Desolas.
The plot revolves around a mysterious artefact which appears to have indoctrination effects. Saren, the antagonist from the first game, is a regular character in the novel too.
As tension is still high between the turians and the humans in the wake of the war, the novel highlights this tension throughout, with the turians and Jack coming to blows regularly over the artifact and what should be done with it.
The novel culminates with the reveal that Desolas plans to use the artefact to make an army of supersoldiers. Jack struggles against this, stops Desolas, and comes to the revelation that he needs to put humanity first.
He then promises 'to watch the dark places and illuminate them', taking his place as the Illusive Man.
