From their days as Ultimate! Play The Game, Rare has almost always been a byword for quality when it comes to games development. The company's current misuse by Microsoft notwithstanding, Rare has a stellar reputation for its work on platforms that included the ZX Spectrum, SNES and N64.

It is perhaps their work with Nintendo that established the company in the eyes of many gamers today, with the likes of Goldeneye 007 and Lylat Wars still holding a special place in the hearts of many veterans of the era.

However, what is less talked about is the games they put out for the NES. During that period, the company were just as likely to put out terrible licensed games as they were to develop something that was actually worth playing.

The Worst Game - Though it was published by LJN Toys, which itself is one of the worst offenders when it comes to dire licensed games, Who Framed Roger Rabbit was developed by the legendary Rare. The aim was to collect the four pieces of Marvin Acme's will before battling the evil Judge Doom.  Though it featured good graphics and a smart random element that placed the pieces in different locations on every play, the game was tedious and featured an insanely difficult final boss battle that had many a gamer tearing their hair out.
