10 Controversial Video Games That Are Insanely Tame Today

4. Chiller (1986)

It must be said that, though totally banal today, 1986's cult arcade hit Chiller would have been pretty horrific at the time. Reminiscent of a romp through a new Field of Screams attraction really looking to earn a reputation, this arcade lightgun game may have caused more than a few sleepless nights.

However, the content presented in this game could hardly be said to rival the likes of movies like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre or Nightmare on Elm Street, and yet this piece of interactive media was somehow considered to be far more offensive. The bulk of the game does revolve around flaying the skin from the bodies of the on-screen targets, but the artwork is so crude that this fossil of a game would have a tough time getting a rise out of anyone today.

It is impressive to think that this blood-soaked experience made the rounds in arcades more than thirty years ago—not to mention it's unofficial NES port—but Chiller is so laughably dated these days that the ESRB would probably rate it 'T' for teen.
