Something of a spiritual successor to Death Race, 1997's PC classic Carmageddon was, among a slew of other violent titles of the time, helping to usher in a new era of polygonal gore and viscera. Not even close to shocking compared to what's been made in the twenty-odd years since its release, this darling of a bygone era was once considered to be completely inappropriate for most audiences.

Heavily censored in multiple countries and outright banned in Brazil, Carmageddon was found to be objectionable based on the game's premise: players were sometimes tasked with running over every single civilian present on a given track. A shower of poorly rendered red fluid would follow every successful collision, but the game was so over-the-top and tongue-in-cheek that only those looking to be offended ever really were.

Remastered and re-released on more consoles and devices than could possibly be concisely surmised, this game still stands as a bit of an icon for late 1990s gamers. Those who found it utterly vile would later focus their attentions on DMA Design's Grand Theft Auto, which would release in October of that same year.
