10 Controversial Video Games That Caused Major Moral Panic

6. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (2004)

gta san andreas The best selling game of all time on the PS2, this GTA Game concerns the fictional state of San Andreas which is modelled upon Nevada and California. Within the game there are three cities - Los Santos (based on Los Angeles), San Fierro (San Francisco) and Las Venturas (Las Vegas). The protagonist is called CJ. He is heading to Los Santos where his mother has been killed. His friends and family are in a terrible state and as he goes through the game, he comes across the reasons his mother was killed. Several real life events are depicted in the game - the rivalry between the Bloods and Crips, the epidemic of crack abuse and the 1992 Los Angeles race riots. The game faced controversy over its mini 'sex game' that was hidden so the production team could check physics. The mini game was never intended to be found - in the game you can have sex by moving the character up and down. It turned out that cheats for the PS2 and mods for the PC activated the game. Many countries banned the game and in the US, the game was forced to carry an AO tag, which prevented it from being sold in many shops. The developers pulled the game and a few months later rereleased it without access to the mini game. This is now hailed by the makers as the definitive GTA: San Andreas release.
