10 Controversial Video Games That Caused Major Moral Panic

7. Thrill Kill (1998)

thrill kill This fighting game for the PSX went cancelled and unpublished. It could feature four characters at a time which was quite a technical feat but the game was exceptionally violent and dodgy in its portrayal of sexuality. In the late 1990s, Thrill Kill was virtually ready for release but EA took a 180 degree turn when they said they didn't want to release the game as it was too violent and it would reflect badly on the company. They also asserted that they would not be offering the game to another company either. Disgruntled former employees who had worked on the game released all sorts of versions of the game onto the internet. The game was set in a 3D room and characters finished each other off by Thrill Kills - close to a Mortal Kombat fatality. Each attack would raise the character's blood lust. Basically 10 damned souls have descended into hell. They each represent a physical manifestation of their mental illness. Marruka, the Goddess of Secrets is having a fun time pitting the sick people against each other for the ultimate prize of reincarnation. A rare example of self censorship.
