3. Ninja Golf

Though they are easily one of the most well represented sports when it comes to releases, it's fair to say golf games tend to be a bit of a mixed bag when it comes to quality. One of the biggest reasons for all these lukewarm receptions is the fact that most of the games just follow the same safe and by-the-book formula.

'Safe' and 'by-the-book' are two terms nobody could ever use for 1990's Ninja Golf however. The proud owner of being named as one of the most notable game covers of all time by IGN, Blue Sky Software's Ninja Golf really does do what it says on the tin.

Players take control of a ninja and things begin normal enough for a golf game of the time, striking a ball down the fairway and then literally running after it. A health bar and a map of the player and the ball then appears at the bottom of the screen, and this plucky Ninja is forced to run through a series of 2D side-scrolling fights against other Ninjas, gophers and even sharks, mutated frogs and snakes depending the environment.
