6. Meeting The New Saints

The Saints Row series cemented itself as a wackier alternative to Grand Theft Auto with its larger-than-life characters and over-the-top action. As the series continued, it gravitated closer to its outlandish side until the fourth instalment gave the protagonist superpowers and set them loose within an alien simulation.

When it was announced that a reboot would return the franchise to its more grounded roots following a long hiatus, fans had something to be excited about.

When the reboot released in 2022, however, it was far from the return to form that players were hoping for.

Alongside the outdated gameplay, the writing also felt like it was stuck in the past. This was apparent as soon as players were introduced to the new Saints.

Not only did the new characters lack the vibrant personalities that made their predecessors so memorable, but the dialogue was filled with Marvel-esque quips that went out of style years before the game released.

By trying too hard to be funny, the humour became forced and awkward. It was as if the developers failed to understand what made the series work in the first place, with the result being a poor imitation of what came before.
