10 Critically Reviled Video Game Movies (That Really Aren't THAT Bad)

3. Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within

Lara Croft: Tomb Raider 2001 Angelina Jolie
Columbia Pictures

Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer Score: 45%

Critics Consensus: "The movie raises the bar for computer animated movies, but the story is dull and emotionally removed."

The Spirits Within often gets a brad rap because of how its bombing at the box office ultimately sent Square Pictures under, but another thing that didn't work in its favour was how mixed it left critics feeling.

The first photorealistic computer-animated film ever, it received praise for its visuals and rendering but, like many other video game adaptations, received criticism for the lack of depth in its primary narrative. But when you take into account some of the films that give video game adaptations such a bad reputation in the first place, this one should not be one of them.

The fact of the matter is that The Spirits Within brings life to a unique story within the Final Fantasy realm - and it does so really, really well. No, it's not as deep as its video game counterparts, but it never claimed to be be so, and there is some strong conflict (both internal and external) as the film forces us to ask questions about how far we're willing to go to save the human race.

Seriously, even if it's just to see the masterful graphics in motion, every video game fan should watch this one.
