10 Crowdfunded Video Games That Never Saw The Light Of Day
8. Ant Simulator
Goal: $4,000 –
Raised: $4,459
Ant Simulator was a tremendous failure, despite exceeding expectations and finding itself initially scheduled for release on Steam and Playstation 4.
In 2013, the
game was cancelled following accusations of theft; namely, co-founder Eric
Tereshinski accused his colleagues (Tyler Monce and Devon Staley) of repurposing company funds in order to
purchase alcohol, as well as the services of several exotic dancers, which the
pair have fervently denied.
In response, Monce and Staley have threatened legal action, the fate of the project currently hanging in the balance. According to them, “[Tereshinski] wanted to create this outlandish story, grab headlines, and make us look terrible", which he seems to have succeeded in doing.
Regardless, Ant Simulator will serve as a cautionary tale, a warning against the potentially manipulative realities of crowdfunding.
In 2016, the game still hasn’t materialised, and while a playable demo is available from the company’s website, there are currently no plans to revitalise the project, and that's unlikely to change anytime soon.
