In 2013, Shadow of the Eternals demonstrated signs of considerable promise following its initial announcement, generating a substantial degree of public interest in a considerably short space of time.
A spiritual-successor to Eternal Darkness – the classic survival horror released in 2002 for Nintendo GameCube – the game was being developed by Precursor Games, a company consisting of several prominent ex-employees from Silicon Knights.
Almost as a direct result, Shadow of the Eternals had no trouble finding an audience, and seemed to be coming together into something with genuine promise. Unfortunately, the game was soon mired by controversy after an employee of the company was arrested on charges of child pornography, damaging the reputation of the fledgling company to an irreparable extent.
At the time, there were also concerns regarding the financial relationship between Precursor Games and Silicon Knights, a concern which was only exacerbated by the bewildering, impractical and perplexing nature of the entire campaign.
