Goal: $100,000 – Raised: $170,954

A game that teaches you how to make games, Code Hero always seemed too good to be true, promising to teach players how to code through example.

In the game, players shoot Javascript using a Code Gun, allowing them to manipulate their surroundings through coding their environment, slowly learning real coding techniques in the process.

Code Hero never materialised however, despite almost doubling its initial funding ambitions, and receiving a considerable amount of media attention. The reasons: poor communication, poor management and excessive spending.

According to several sources, the team behind the game squandered their reserves employing freelance developers to assist with the project, which they couldn’t actually afford. They also failed to keep their community adequately informed, which lead to fears that the team had hightailed with the cash.

Ultimately, Code Hero aimed to make a genuine difference in the world, promising to revolutionise the manner by which players interact with video games. It failed, but the sentiment behind the attempt was tremendous, just poorly executed.
