10 Crucial Things The Nintendo Switch Must Do In Year One
9. Keep The Miiverse And Build More Amiibo Functionality
Nintendo have sold almost 37 million amiibo since first launching into the "toys-to-life" category. That's more than half the number of 3DS consoles sold worldwide.
Introduced as an extra way to interact with games, the figures have also become genuinely collectable: addictively so. The next group of anticipated figures are from the 30th anniversary Legend of Zelda line, including Toon Link and Toon Zelda - both from The Wind Waker - an 8-bit version of Link similar to the design of Mario from Super Mario Maker and Link in the style of 64-bit hit Ocarina of Time. If Nintendo can expand the functionality of the old whilst offering new amiibo, everyone's a winner.
Elsewhere, the Miiverse is a typically Nintendo version of a social network. It allows for messaging, but blocks spoilers and heavily moderates user content, creating "help" pages but not really encouraging direct messaging and relying on friend codes to make the Wii U online areas safe spaces to be in.
Super Mario Maker arguably has some of the best use of the Miiverse system for posting friendly messages about defeated levels, and in other games it has become an artist's paradise. The Miiverse is fairly crude, but it works.
With the Switch, Nintendo must blend in Streetpass and Spotpass features from the 3DS to ensure there's a decent online experience home or away. This, in addition to keeping the Miiverse running.
