6. The Ranches - Tales Of Symphonia
Originally launched on the Gamecube, Tales of Symphonia is the seventh instalment in Namco's underrated JRPG saga.
Due to the action-oriented real-time combat, the luscious cel-shaded graphics, and the sprawling story, it's easy to see why Tales of Symphonia is hailed as one of the best entries in the series. (Shame about the Remastered version though.) Even though the plot explores discrimination, morality, and free will, these themes are dealt with carefully so they're not too heavy for younger players.
That is until our hero and his party discover the Human Ranches. After seeing the captives in this ranch, first-time players may assume they've wandered into a penitentiary or a detention centre.
But then you notice something. These innocent people are forced to perform backbreaking labour. They're being enslaved, tortured, and experimented on. Children are imprisoned, families are separated, and the facilitators are performing public executions.
And that should be when the penny drops. The Human Ranches aren't prisons, but concentration camps. Although it's bold for Tales of Symphonia to explore challenging themes like this, throwing in slavery and genocide clashes with the rest of the whimsical adventure tale.
