10 Darkest Bad Endings In Video Games
3. A Great Jelly Thing (I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream)
Now, this is a particularly unique entry, as the infamous I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream is a point-and-click adventure game (based on the short story of the same name by Harlan Ellison) that features multiple bad endings. In fact, out of the seven main story conclusions, there's only one good ending, with every other one resulting in a fate worse than death.
The horrifyingly dystopian setup of this game focuses on a group of five humans living in a post-apocalyptic world overseen by a malicious artificial intelligence known as AM - and this AI really, really hates humanity. Given his hatred, he continuously tortures these unlucky folks.
Towards the end, if you're unable to fully defeat AM, your character will be turned into a "soft-jelly thing," a mouthless creature that can't die or hurt itself, stuck for eternity unable to do anything but silently scream. While there are multiple variations on what happens to the other survivors or a human colony on Luna, this horrifyingly bleak outcome occurs to the player character in five of the seven endings.
Oh, and this is the canonical ending of the short story, too, in case you wanted to witness this misery in written form as well.
