Sometimes, a sequel is cancelled for reasons that require little to no explanation; money. Unfortunately, this is what derailed the development of Knights of the Old Republic 3.

The third, and presumably final, chapter in BioWare's beloved Star Wars RPG series was planned to be something mighty impressive. Writer John Stafford made it clear that KOTOR 3 had a completed story and was ready to go into full development, while designer Chris Avellone suggested that it would involve the player tracking Revan into the unknown regions.

KOTOR 3 was scheduled to enter development sometime in 2005, but publisher LucasArts ran into some financial trouble. A need for quick cash is likely the reason that LucasArts pushed developer Obsidian to release KOTOR 2 earlier than they had wanted to, further putting the publisher into a financial nosedive, as KOTOR 2 sold considerably less than the first title.

As a result of shifting priorities within LucasArts, KOTOR 3 was abandoned and the conclusion to the story that was started all those years ago remains in flux. According to a few rumors, there is some desire within Electronic Arts to bring the series back, but until we've got it in our hands, Revan's finale will sadly stay in the darker corners of the galaxy.
