Games have a way of scaring us in a way that no film, TV show or book could ever do. The reason why games get under our skin in a far more terrifying way is because we take on the role of the main character as an extension of ourselves. So, when a sword wielding pyramid headed demon chases after us, it tends to get the ol' ticker pumping slightly harder than if we were reading about it. Well, hey. That's what we sign up for when we buy a game that promises blood, guts and jump scares, right? So we don't think any more of it.

Although we have all suffered a few wet-your-pants moments whilst playing games, there are a few gamers who have their own tales, myths and stories about the times that video games took on horrifying lives of their own. Within this list is a collection of tales about the times gamers claim to have been part of more than just a game, but part of something more sinister, twisted and evil. From an urban legend about a game causing multiple suicides to a gamer being stalked by a pyromaniacal Sim, this list will reveal the most terrifying tales of haunted video games.

10. Herobrine Controlled By A Gamer's Dead Brother - Minecraft

This urban legend follows a Minecraft gamer who was only just starting out and was trying to make sense of the world around them. Due to the game's low-resolution graphics, they thought they saw a cow in the distance, but as they approached they realised it was another person named Herobrine, who quickly scampered away. Despite not being in multiplayer mode, Herobrine kept appearing.

In order to get to the bottom of this, the gamer posted on numerous forums asking whether anyone else encountered Herobrine. Every time he posted, it would be taken down within moments until eventually, they got a message from Herobrine themselves simply saying "Stop".

A fellow gamer reached out to them and said that the game's developer, who went by the name Notch, would frequently use that name when he played. After more forum posts, they found out that it wasn't Notch, but his brother who used that alias. The gamer emailed Notch to ask about his brother. Notch responded by saying he did indeed have a brother who would play by that name, but he was no longer alive.
