5. Noble Team - Halo: Reach

This is another one that you may have seen coming but the way it all plays out is still pretty damn hard to stomach.

Halo: Reach tells the story of Noble Team, an elite supersoldier squad defending Reach against a Covenant attack under overwhelming odds. The team all sacrifice themselves in various ways to try and ensure humanity’s victory over the Covenant. When a makeshift bomb’s timer malfunctions, Jorge stays behind to detonate it manually, killing himself in the process but taking the supercarrier down with him. Subsequently, the team aid the local military of New Alexandria in taking out Covenant forces and evacuating the civilians, but Kat is killed by a Covenant sniper as they try to retreat. After being critically wounded, Carter slams the ship into a Covenant mobile assault platform, enabling his surviving teammates to reach their objective.

The game is dotted with these painful but heroic deaths of Noble Team, culminating in a last stand by your player character, Six, who fights to the end before being overwhelmed.
