6. Henry & Sam - The Last of Us

The Last of Us is a pretty lonely game but for a while there our heroes Joel and Ellie team up with brothers Sam and Henry.

Which seems like a nice strength-in-numbers reprieve from the nasty game world, until you remember this is The Last of Us, the place where dreams go to die and nothing good ever happens.

The brothers tag along for some time and become pretty friendly with Joel and Ellie. Of course, that just lulled us into a false sense of security before the cordyceps hit the fan. Just as everything is especially peachy, it’s revealed that Sam has been infected. His older brother Henry tries to stop Joel from shooting him but eventually deals the final blow himself. In his grief he takes his own life. It’s an extraordinarily painful scene and a reminder that nothing and no-one in The Last of Us is safe for long.
