10 Disappointing Sequels To Iconic Video Games

6. Resident Evil 5

Co-owning the banner of horror on PS1 with the esteemed Silent Hill, the first Resident Evil title was an essential release for Sony's maiden console. The series improved with every instalment, and the fourth game saw a peak for Capcom's magnum opus franchise, which promptly fell off a cliff once the fifth game hit shelves.

Resident Evil 4 was a deviation in the series, switching to an over-the-shoulder point of view, but though there was an increase in action, there was still a clear link to the unsettling horror present in the previous games.

With its fifth entry, Resident Evil embraced action too much, and as such the fear factor was drastically reduced. Resident Evil 5 is a shooter, which wouldn't be an issue if the frightful feeling was present, but it isn't. The game isn't scary at all.

If the aim was to conjure a middle-of-the-road military-inspired shooter, it succeeded, but surely it was unwise to use the Resident Evil name to push it.

Once again, the lofty heights of its predecessor proved the downfall of the sequel. Resident Evil 4 was simply the best the franchise has ever been, and what goes up, must come down.
