10 Disappointing Sequels To Iconic Video Games

Yes, a numbered sequel to Tetris actually exists.

Released in 1993 for the NES (a year after the emergence of the Super Nintendo), Tetris 2 is a perfect example of if it ain't broke, don't fix it. The original is arguably the most iconic video game ever made, and ushered in a thirst for puzzle games using a formula that is just as engaging today as when it released in the mid-1980s.

Wielding a timeless theme tune and colourful aesthetic, Tetris captured the hearts of everyone from impressionable kids on the Game Boy to millennial mums who get their Tetris fix on the iPhone. The series has seen numerous iterations and alterations, with titles like Tetris Effect, Puyo Puyo Tetris and Tetris Attack leading the charge, but the numbered sequel, Tetris 2, is a whimper for the series rather than a majestic shout.

The sequel more closely resembles Dr Mario and Lumines than the pioneering formula of the original. The true disappointment comes from the name, Tetris 2, which promises an advancement on what is already perfect.

There's a reason there has never been a sequel to The Bible, and there's a reason why there will never be a Sgt. Pepper 2. Some things are precious, and Tetris is included.
