10 Disappointing Video Games That Never Lived Up To The Hype

2. Watch Dogs

GTA definitive edition
Ubisoft

After its initial announcement in 2012, the hype around Watch Dogs was absolutely huge following some incredible looking trailers.

At a time when the concept of hacking of major infrastructure was at the forefront of gaming with the popularity of the likes of Anonymous and Lizard Squad, Watch Dogs seemed to be a fascinating breath of fresh air in the action shooter landscape. Rather than just going in all guns blazing, Watch Dogs would have the player hacking their way into different scenarios and events.

The Ubisoft developed title however despite having excellent gameplay was let down by a truly bland story. All of the hacking elements in the game also seemed far to scripted and basic to be actually as enjoyable and inventive as promised in the trailers. Several fans and critics were also upset that the finished game seemingly looked nowhere near as good as the original trailers.

In true modern fashion the game was plagued with technical issues and bugs upon launch. It was also dubbed an inferior version of the hugely popular Grand Theft Auto 5 which had released the year before.

Despite its unsatisfying performance the game was popular enough to spawn several sequels. Unfortunately for Ubisoft the damage done due to the undelivered hype meant the franchise was never able to reach the heights that the developers and fans had hoped for.
