10 Disastrous Redesigns That Ruined Iconic Video Game Characters

6. Spyro The Dragon (Skylanders)

Spyro – an iconic mascot most prevalent in the 90s – is somewhat of a relic, abandoned in the 2000s following numerous failed attempts to rejuvenate his character.

Since then, he’s become part of the phenomenon, Skylanders – a commercial juggernaut responsible for over three billion sales, making it one of the most successful franchises in gaming history.

With that being said, the character has become somewhat of an afterthought, a smaller aspect of a larger universe, and no longer a central component of the games. As such, he’s been redesigned significantly, mainly to ensure the character remains in keeping with the rest of the series – which isn’t necessarily a bad thing – but the redesign itself leaves a significant amount to be desired, what with the character appearing as though a cross between an Orc and a Gremlin.

Perhaps, I’m being too harsh. Spyro’s just gone from looking mischievous to looking downright vicious, clearly repurposed as a secondary character, severely lacking the same sense of personality.
