10 Divisive Video Game Endings Nobody Agrees On
5. God Of War III

For the most part, God of War III is a hugely satisfying conclusion to Kratoss apocalyptic quest for revenge against the Olympian Gods - save for one last twist at the end. Upon finally reaching Pandoras Box, which will give him the power to kill Zeus, Kratos discovers that it is empty.
It turns out that Hope, which was thought to be the only power left in the box, has been within him the whole time, giving him the strength to kill the gods. After killing Zeus, Athena demands Kratos give her the power, but he kills himself instead, releasing Hope to the rest of mankind.
If that all sounds a bit hokey to you, well, youre certainly not alone in that feeling. While God of War III was universally praised when it was released, its ending was certainly more divisive. A lot of people feel like it is too corny and contrived, especially for the God of War series, which is known for its distinct lack of sentimentality.
On the other hand, a legitimate argument could be made that the ending is very appropriate, not only for its sense of closure, but because it explores the tormented psyche of Kratos, a character who, until that point, was rather one-note. The trilogy ends with his redemption through sacrifice, which is actually quite fitting when you think about it.
