1. Overlord

The original Overlord title is a wickedly funny action-rpg with some light real-time strategy elements that thrusts the players into a satirical fantasy land. Here, you fill the boots of a fallen hero of the realm who has been revived by a band of goblinoid minions in search of a new master to crown as their new Overlord.

What follows is a raucous romp through various fantasy locales where you use your minions (and your own weapons and magical powers) to take the fight to the seven "heroes" of the surrounding lands who slew the previous Overlord.

The best mechanic is how the game tracks how corrupt you are as you play through the story. At points, you'll have some moral choices (such as returning food to a peasant village stolen by the gluttonous halfling Melvin Underbelly), and you can also cause a lot of collateral damage by killing innocent townsfolk and plundering gold on your quest. In doing so, your appearance grows more devilish, and you'll gain access to more destructive end-game spells.

If you want to live out an evil fantasy warlord power fantasy, grab Overlord or its sequel. Just steer very clear of the 2015 isometric franchise revival.
