If you missed Prototype, you'd be forgiven for dismissing it as just one of many action-RPGs that could be found on the Xbox 360 and PS3. However, Prototype stood out for its unique grim-dark aesthetic and fast-paced combat, and its twisting storyline.

You play as Alex Mercer, a medical researcher infected with the BLACKLIGHT virus. This virus rewrote his genetic code, gifting him powerful shapeshifting abilities including forming vicious claws, large Hammerfists, and a powerful blade arm out of his own muscle mass. You'll be flipping and ripping your way through New York's citizens in no time at all.

By the end of the game, the player learns that Mercer was once the leader of a team who synthesised the newest form of the virus, and he had allowed the virus to merge with himself to survive being killed by Gentek (the pharmaceutical company responsible for synthesising and cultivating the virus) after they abandoned the BLACKLIGHT project and wanted to tie up any loose ends. He loses his faith in humanity, and, by the events of Prototype 2, has planned to infect the whole world with a vaccine that will accelerate global infection and mutation of the original virus. Basically, you're really not the good guy.
