10 "Evil" Video Games Where Being Good Pays Off

6. Working For an Evil Government Doesn't Mean You Have to Be Evil - Papers, Please

Star Wars The Old Republic
Lucas Pope

In Papers, Please you play as the inspector of a border checkpoint in the fictional dictatorship of Arstotzka. Due to the oppressive regime of your country, you have to be diligent with your work and make some really cruel choices to keep your family alive and well.

However, despite the fact that the game typically penalizes you for acting nice and showing compassion to other people, there is one event where choosing love over duty is the better choice.

At one point during your career at the checkpoint, you will be approached by a young soldier named Sergiu. The man will ask you for a favor, explaining that he wants you to let his lover Elisa cross the border, despite the fact she doesn’t have a passport and proper documentation.

Given that you receive citations and lose money for mistakes, you would think that this random act of kindness is only going to endanger you and your family.

But even though letting Elisa through does give you a monetary penalty, if she and her Sergiu are reunited and survive oncoming attacks on the border, Sergiu will actually visit you at the checkpoint again and thank you with triple the amount of money you’ve lost!

Love wins!
