10 Exact Moments Sh*t Got Real In Great Video Games
3. Dying Light - Nightmare Volatile
After air-dropping into a quarantined city filled with zombies and a desperate human populace, one may expect some of the ghastly jump-scare horrors that reasonably follow. But it won't take long before the standard-issue zombies that meander the deserted streets and charge only when you pass by, will be like your favourite bedtime toy when compared with the Nightmare Volatiles.
As most nightmares do, these cuddly fellows only emerge at night. On the first Antizin drop, you, playing as protagonist Crane, dickishly burn the antidote to establish contact with crimelord/terrorist Rais who is operating inside the abandoned city limits with impunity. The orange sky fades to total blackness and the alarm on your watch begins to bleep. You peek through a crack between two metal sheets, then you see it.
With split-jawed fangs reminiscent of Nomak in Blade 2 and bulging fleshless muscles, these Volatiles pursue you with the kind relentless speed that reduces you to a button-bashing, sweaty mess. You may, as this writer may have, spend much of this game either waiting out or sleeping through the nighttime periods where possible, such is the discomfort brought on by these beasts.
