10 Exact Moments Video Game Heroes Became Villains
8. Handsome Jack - Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel
Handsome Jack is considered to be one of the best video game villains ever written. He's charismatic, full of himself, and gives you plenty of reason why you'd want to wipe that smirk off his smug face.
However, although Jack is perfectly comfortable in his villain role in Borderlands 2, the Pre-Sequel tries to add some depth to his character, showing that he wasn't always a self-serving megalomaniac, and his plan of becoming Pandora's dictator actually has a more humble and well-intentioned origin.
The entirety of the prequel's story revolves around Handsome Jack's descent into madness. At the beginning of the game, he is just a low-ranking Hyperion employee who hires you to help him overthrow the corporation's corrupt heads.
Early on, he seems to care about all the people you help together, but as his influence in Hyperion grows and the power gets to his head, Handsome Jack starts having delusions of grandeur and styles himself into a tyrant who's going to "civilize" all of Pandora under his rule.
It is for this reason why the Pre-Sequel is actually a great addition to the series story-wise. It does an awesome job of adding a layer of depth to a beloved and amazing character.
