10 Exact Moments Video Game Heroes Became Villains
7. Detlaff - The Witcher 3
Detlaff from the Witcher 3's DLC, Blood and Wine, is a rather tragic character.
Despite being a powerful vampire, he doesn't kill his victims to feed or fulfil some sadistic desires but rather because he is blackmailed into doing it.
This said, he does eventually turn into a proper villain later in the story.
When Geralt first discovers Detlaff is behind the murders in Beauclair, it turns out that the vampire doesn't want to do it, but someone is threatening to kill his missing lover Syanna if he doesn't eliminate the targets.
The Witcher offers to help him find Syanna, and although Detlaff appears to be remorseful about his crimes, when he learns the truth behind the girl's kidnapping, it shatters any and all sense of empathy.
The moment Detlaff truly turns into a villain is when he discovers it was actually Syanna herself who was using him to enact her revenge on Beauclair.
At this point, the vampire turns from a victim to a threat, siccing an army of vampires on Beauclair, causing hundreds of deaths, just so he can kill his manipulative lover.
Yes, she used him, but causing the vampire apocalypse in revenge is something a villain does, not a victim, so you shouldn't feel sorry for him.
