1. Desmond Kills Lucy - Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood

By the time Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood was released in 2010, the Ubisoft series was primed to reach its commercial peak. Assasin's Creed II had delivered a huge upgrade on the 2008 original game in the series with a massive open world, improved mechanics and, most importantly of all, developed two of the best storylines for Ezio and Desmond.

And whilst Brotherhood continued on a lot of the good work AC2 laid the foundations for, the storylines both inside and out of the Animus failed on the whole to really land the same level of impact its predecessor had. Whilst the majority of these storylines are more than fine, the whole series nosedived off the edge when it came to the main plot's finale.

When Desmond retrieves the Piece of Eden he and the Assassins have located thanks to Ezio, a vision of Juno appears and takes hold of his body. Players are then forced to stab Lucy, who had just spent the past three games being Desmond's closest ally and more-than-teased love interest, before the pair collapse and the credits roll.

Whilst it certainly blindsided the bulk of players at the time, the reasoning behind killing off such a popular character was lost on most of these same players. Whilst the stuff in the Animus was always what players were more interested in to begin with, this was the point in which most of them switched off entirely from the plots outside of it.

On top of that, the decision to kill off Lucy is really the point in which the Desmond Miles era of Assassin's Creed's storyline starts to become convoluted and messy, which would contribute hugely to Brotherhood's two follow-ups, Revelations and AC3, being two of the most mixed titles in the franchise.
