6. Protecting Natalya - GoldenEye 007

GoldenEye is often singled out as one of the greatest ever video games adapted from a movie, though let's be honest, that's more for the sublime multiplayer suite than the fitfully fun, often infuriating single player campaign.

The primary source of ire is unquestionably a series of levels late in the game where the player is tasked with babysitting gormless Russian hacker Natalya Simonova.

Natalya's shambolically terrible A.I. means she frequently runs into your own bullets, turns direction on a dime - often the wrong direction, no less - and basically makes escorting her to safety as controller-throwingly annoying as possible.

This culminates in the legendarily tough Control level, where the player has to spend a few minutes fending off a fleet of enemies from several directions while Natalya hacks a computer terminal.

Fails were made, tempers flared and an entire generation of gamers decided they didn't need to see the end of the game that badly - the multiplayer alone was plenty value-for-money.
