10 Expensive Video Games Nobody Wanted

6. Daikatana

Ion Storm

John Romero co-founded id Software, responsible for groundbreaking titles like Doom, Wolfenstein 3D and Quake. However, that's not what his name is synonymous with.

The absolute spectacle surrounding, and including, the release of Daikatana is his biggest hubris.

Besides the claims about Romero making [players] his bitch in a provocative advert, the behind the scenes was even worse. Initially pitched in 1995, it took a full five years and a rumoured thirty million dollar budget to see Romero's darling brought to life.

Reports of a rockstar lifestyle, a revolving door of staff and other bold claims saw skepticism turn into annoyance over the delays, and the end result did little to quell that.

With a projection of 2.5 million copies expected to be sold, Daikatana saw low-end chart numbers on release. By the end of its release year, it had barely sold fifty thousand, roughly 2% of its intended figure.

Rightfully hailed as "one of the worst video games of all time", the only good thing to come from Ion Storm studios was Deux Ex. Romero had nothing to do with that, thankfully.
