10 Extremely Expensive Upcoming Video Games (That Have Already Flopped)
1. Star Citizen
The game that may end up caving in on itself, Star Citizen is ambitious both in its scope and in its means of financing. A crowdfunding campaign dating back to 2012 led the title to surpass its initial financial goals to monumental heights, surpassing 150 million dollars to become the biggest crowd-sourced project ever. This led to developer Cloud Imperium Games starting the single-player mode Squadron 42, a star-studded affair with the likes of Mark Hamill and Gary Oldman headlining an all-star cast.
While the talent recruited to fill out the story mode is amazingly-impressive, it's unclear when, if ever, the game will actually be 'finished.' They keep adding new things to the story and characters (played by prominent stars), seemingly losing focus on what the developers originally envisioned the game to be. The fact that the devs are earning consistent income through microtransactions seems to be freezing the game in place, leading to a lot of false promises and stagnant creative progress.
The sheer amount of money Star Citizen has made off of gamers' donations is ludicrous, especially when the game likely wouldn't earn it back if they released the full title officially. They've already disappointed a huge amount of past donators, and by the time it actually comes out, they'll have disappointed too many to have made the whole process worth it.
