10 Fearsome Video Game Women You Should Never Mess With

5. Heavenly Sword - Nariko

Article

Heavenly Sword was an oft-overlooked gem of a game released for the PlayStation 3. In the game, you played as a scantily-clad hero wielding a variety of melee weapons, decimating enemies with frequent presses of the Square button - I'm not talking about God of War, which the game was very similar to, I'm talking about Nariko's quest to protect her people against the villainous King Bohan. To do so, Nariko wields the Heavenly Sword, a sacred blade that grants its wielder increased combat prowess and abilities significantly above the average human - at the cost of the wielder's life, for the weapon drains the life of its user until he or she dies.

Initially, the story begins innocently enough when the forces of King Bohan ransack Nariko's village, assaulting the overwhelmed people in pursuit of the sword. Entrusted with the blade by her father, Nariko takes it under her care, fighting her way through groups of combatants until she is finally cornered, and forced to take up the blade just to escape.

If Kratos can parade around in not much clothing and f*ck sh*t up, so can she.

Over the course of the game, Nariko, with help from her close friend Kai, manage to slaughter their way through a significant number of Bohan's soldiers, both grunts and elite officers. Upon fighting off a rather large contingent of opponents, the Heavenly Sword fully drains Nariko of her life force, causing her to fall and die, just as the game's opening FMV showed.

This time however, Nariko, desperate to save her people, pleads with the sword, promising to care for it, preventing it from becoming a neglected relic - the sword needs the people far more than the villagers need the cursed blade. Accepting of this, the sword grants Nariko life, reincarnating her. Ascendant to a new plane of existence, Nariko returns to the battle and slaughters the %*$& out of most of Bohan's remaining forces, easily murdering a sizable portion of Bohan's army.

Now being the one in the desperate position, Bohan calls upon the King Raven - a figure that has been motivating his villainous nature for the whole game - and merges with it, growing in strength and ability just as Nariko has.

And... Nariko kicks his ass.

Beaten and battered, Bohan is at Nariko's mercy just as the Raven spirit leaves him (after it pecks his eyes out - what a douche). Logic at this point would dictate that Nariko murder the complete HELL out of Bohan - but his surviving son, Roche, pleads with Nariko to spare the now-blind king, and she gracefully accepts (she's a better person than Kratos, at least...)

Now after all of the chaos has ended, you'd hope for a happier ending? That Nariko, after kicking mounds of ass, is happily allowed to return to her village in peace, and - wait, nope, she still dies.
